Looking for an interior designer Marrakech owners can trust from abroad is not only a question of style. It is a question of local presence, artisan access, budget clarity, site supervision and communication. In Marrakech, the difference between a beautiful concept and a successful project is often made on site: inside a riad courtyard, in a Sidi Ghanem workshop, during a material sample review, or in the weekly decisions that keep a renovation moving.

Atelier I.M. Butterflies is a Marrakech-based interior design studio Marrakech clients choose for high-end residential and hospitality interiors. We specialise in spaces that need more than decoration: riads with architectural memory, villas that require a complete interior language, boutique hotels with an operational brief, and commercial places that must be both beautiful and functional.

Our work is rooted in Moroccan craft, but never trapped in a postcard version of Morocco. We design with zellige, tadelakt, cedar, sculpted plaster, brass, stone, light and proportion. The result is warm, precise, contemporary and deeply connected to place.

Who we are

Atelier I.M. Butterflies was founded by Imane Mellali, an award-winning interior architect based in Marrakech and laureate of the ARTCO Designers Challenge 2020. The studio works across the medina, Palmeraie, Guéliz, Hivernage, Agdal and the wider Marrakech area, with projects ranging from intimate private homes to full hospitality concepts.

Our clients are often international: European and American owners, Moroccan families living abroad, investors buying a riad, and hospitality entrepreneurs who need a local partner capable of translating their vision into a buildable, budgeted and beautifully finished space.

What makes the studio different is its focus. Atelier I.M. Butterflies is not a construction company that happens to decorate, and not a real estate service that adds design at the end. We are a pure interior architecture and design studio, with a premium identity, a local network and a process built for owners who may not be in Marrakech every week.

What we design

Riad renovation interior design

A riad renovation in Marrakech requires more than good taste. It needs structural awareness, medina logistics, artisan coordination, humidity control, terrace waterproofing, custom furniture and a clear understanding of heritage. Our riad renovation interior design service covers the full interior journey: site assessment, concept, plans, 3D visuals, material selection, artisan sourcing, costing, supervision and final styling.

For foreign owners, we can structure the project remotely: photo reports, WhatsApp updates, video meetings, written approvals and decision logs. You stay informed without needing to be physically present for every site question.

Private villas

For villas in Palmeraie, Route de Fès, Agdal or the outskirts of Marrakech, we design complete interiors for new builds and renovations. This includes spatial planning, bespoke furniture, curated lighting, material palettes, bathrooms, kitchens, dressing rooms, outdoor living areas and the relationship between interior architecture and landscape.

A villa should not feel like a showroom. It should feel composed, personal and calm, with every material chosen for the climate, the light and the way the house will be lived in.

Boutique hotels and commercial spaces

Hospitality interiors need identity and operation at the same time. A boutique hotel, riad guesthouse, restaurant or retail space must photograph beautifully, welcome guests naturally and work behind the scenes. We design reception sequences, rooms, common areas, service flows, storage, breakfast spaces, terraces, lighting moods and durable finishes.

When a riad is converted into a guesthouse, we also integrate hospitality logic early in the plan: circulation, linen, maintenance, fire safety requirements, guest comfort and operational layout.

Our design language: Contemporary Moroccan Luxury

Our signature is luxury interior design Morocco with restraint. We honour Moroccan craft, but we strip the excess. The beauty of a Marrakech interior often lies in proportion, shadow, texture and one strong material gesture rather than in accumulation.

We work with a warm but controlled palette: deep green, terracotta, cream, gold, ivory, cedar and mineral neutrals. We use hand-cut zellige for selected walls or floors, tadelakt for continuous mineral surfaces, Atlas cedar for warmth and structure, sculpted gebs for light and detail, hammered brass for reflection, and custom furniture to make old buildings work for modern life.

What we avoid is the “Moroccan postcard” trap: too many arches, too many motifs, too many colours, too many references in the same room. Genuine craft needs space. A single zellige wall can be stronger than a fully tiled room. A quiet tadelakt bathroom can feel more luxurious than a decorative overload. A cedar door, beautifully made, can carry more memory than an entire catalogue of imported objects.

Why work with a local studio?

Choosing an English speaking interior designer Morocco clients can communicate with easily is important, but language is only the beginning. A local studio protects the project on the ground. We can visit the site, meet the artisans, inspect samples, negotiate directly, notice problems early and keep the work moving when remote owners are abroad.

Our local network gives access to craftsmen in zellige, tadelakt, cedar, brass, plaster and custom furniture without unnecessary layers. That matters for quality and budget. It also matters for authenticity: the best result comes from selecting the right artisan for the right detail, not from applying one decorative recipe everywhere.

Administrative and site realities are also local. Medina access, heritage constraints, permits, neighbourhood logistics, delivery schedules and inspection needs cannot be managed from a distance alone. For international owners, the strongest model is a clear design vision combined with on-the-ground presence.

Remote project management for foreign owners

Many owners discover Marrakech through a property opportunity before they have a local team. They may buy a riad from Europe, plan a villa renovation from the United States, or prepare a boutique hospitality project while travelling between countries. In that context, the most valuable service is not only design; it is structured decision-making.

Our remote management process is designed to remove uncertainty. We document what needs approval, what affects the budget, what changes the schedule and what can wait. Material samples are photographed in natural light. Site progress is reported regularly. Quotes are explained, not simply forwarded. When a technical issue appears, we frame the options clearly: impact, cost, timing and recommendation.

This is especially important in riad projects. Old buildings reveal themselves gradually. A wall may need treatment, a terrace may need stronger waterproofing, a bathroom layout may need to move because of existing drainage. A local interior designer Marrakech owners can trust helps transform those discoveries into decisions rather than delays.

How we work: 5 phases

01

Brief & site assessment

We study your goals, budget, timeline, property condition, constraints and desired level of service.

02

Concept & 3D design

We define the design language, layouts, material palette, furniture direction and key visual decisions.

03

Artisan sourcing & costing

We consult trusted craftsmen, compare quotes and align the design with a realistic budget.

04

Site supervision

We follow execution, coordinate trades, report progress and manage design decisions as the site evolves.

05

Delivery & styling

We review finishes, manage final details, style the space and prepare it for living, hosting or opening.

What makes a good first brief?

Before the first consultation, the most helpful elements are simple: the property location, photos or videos, approximate surface, plans if available, intended use, target opening or move-in date, budget range and examples of spaces you admire. We do not need a perfect brief. We need honest information.

A strong brief also includes what you want to avoid. Some clients do not want an overly decorative Moroccan look. Others want a highly crafted riad but with hotel-level comfort. Some need easy maintenance because the property will be rented. These details shape the project as much as the images you love.

FAQ

Do you work with clients based outside Morocco?

Yes. Many of our clients live abroad. We organise remote approvals, photo reporting, video meetings and documented decisions so the project can move without constant travel.

What languages do you work in?

We work in English, French, Arabic and Darija. For international clients, English can be used throughout the project.

How long does a riad renovation take?

A light refresh can take a few months. A full medina riad renovation often requires eight to twelve months, depending on structural condition, permits, artisan details and level of finish.

Can you manage a project while I am abroad?

Yes. We can manage design, costing, artisan coordination and site supervision with structured remote communication.

What is your fee structure?

It depends on scope. We can propose a consultation, concept design, full interior architecture mission, site supervision or turnkey support. Fees are clarified before the mission starts.
